“When I am up at 'silly o'clock' I will try to remember this thread”

This week, the Awake and up all night discussion in the cancer chat forum reached a one-year milestone. For a whole year, people have found support from posting in the discussion thread and reading the ongoing conversations.

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects of cancer treatment. If you find it hard to get a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7. The Awake and up all night discussion thread was created with the aim of being a dedicated space for people to access peer support when experiencing sleep issues.

“What a great idea for a thread.  I often had trouble falling asleep, especially when I had been diagnosed but was waiting results, my brain was in worry overdrive.”

“Great idea to have an Awake Thread in the Cancer Chat group.  That way everyone who has problems sleeping due to a cancer diagnosis or having trouble sleeping because of treatment has somewhere to come for support.”

“You've come to the right place though, as I sometimes feel down, especially in the small hours when I can't sleep and no-one else is around.”

“Have you tried leaving the radio on fairly quietly once you're in bed?  Many moons ago it worked for me as the more I tried to concentrate on a song, the sooner I'd nod off.”

"My go to trick now is to listen to ghost or horror stories on YouTube.  I've found Raven Reads a good one - yeah, they're American and can be a bit of a cheese fest - but some stories are creepy and Raven has a very soothing voice."

“I love old movies from the 50's and 60's and have them on in the background. I don't really watch them as such, just having them on in the background seems to help! My other half doesn't mind either, so long as I keep the volume down....Also, sounds of nature playing in the background is another thing. I love the sound of the sea and you can buy loads of nature sounds on CD or other formats...it is soothing.”

“I check the forum when I’m awake but if nothing much is happening, II go to my free Jigsaw Appp and spend quite a lot of time doing jigsaws! It is a good way to pass the time in the middle of the night if you are not sleeping.”

  • Abraxane causing pounding regular heartbeat. Keeping me awake.

  • Hi Pipd,

It’s Megan here from Macmillan’s Online Community team. I am sorry to hear you are struggling to sleep. Have you discussed the side effects of Abraxane with your GP? If you regularly struggle to sleep, we would encourage you to have a chat with your GP so they can review any medications and look at ways to support you.

In the meantime, we hope you will find company during the night in the Awake and up all night discussion. You are welcome to post in this space when you are struggling to sleep.

Please remember that alongside accessing peer to peer support here on the Community, the Macmillan Support Line teams are also here for you. Sometimes it can help to talk things through with someone who’s there to listen. They’re available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00email or live webchat.

I hope the above makes sense and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Community@macmillan.org.uk or send a private message to the Moderator account.

    Best wishes

  • Morning All!

Just checking in on the site and saw this link - I am wide awake and have had a very poor night- but the upside is that this is due to my LAST chemotherapy session yesterday!! The amount of steroids I have before the chemo keeps me so wired...

I have found a good book works for me, but there are times I cannot concentrate on that especially if I have an upset stomach/heartburn, which I have as I am typing.. What has helped me is something my daughter bought me - a Snoozeband. This is a soft headband with very tiny and flat speakers in it which allows you to lie down easily and still listen to music/radio/podcasts etc - and no disturbing anyone else. It can be used as a blackout as well.

Bluetooth and Rechargeable by USB and can be set to switch off in hourly multiples.  The App has links to background music. BBC Radio 3 Unwind is also very good.  I did try music and sounds via Spotify but it severally messed up the algorithm for my weekly recommends etc ( I enjoy a wide range of music and my Spotify age is 19 - not tooshabby for a 69 year old!!)

Another favourite of mine is the Headspace APP - lots of calming stuff, meditation courses and some sounds.

At least it is light outside - off to do some watering before the heat of the day kicks in!!!!!

    Best wishes to all

    KrisPy

  • Now I want to stay awake in the middle of the night, but usually I just go for a pee and then (when I'm back in bed) imagine i own a 7 million pound yacht and am sailing on the Med!! (That's the Mediterranean, not the Medication). And off I drift...
